Is Professional Photography Worth It for Modeling?

For twelve-year-old Ireland, a wardrobe consultation in Trussville became the beginning of a portfolio, an Atlanta scouting experience, and a new possibility. Professional photography for modeling portfolio can be a crucial step in opening doors for young talent like Ireland.

Ireland’s portfolio began with her dream of modeling and a plan to show her personality, expression, and range.

Ireland’s modeling portfolio began in her closet.

I had gone to her family’s home in Trussville to meet with her mother, Joanna, and plan a session around a dream Ireland was ready to explore. She wanted to model. Together, we would create photographs that showed her range, her expression, and the different sides of her personality.

There was a lavender cotton sweater, a denim jacket, a simple white T-shirt. Baggy jeans. Athletic wear. A soft peachy-pink dress with a lovely, whimsical feel. An all-black outfit that I could already imagine in an editorial portrait. As we went through her wardrobe, the collection began to take shape.

Ireland was twelve, and that fact guided every decision. Her youth belonged in the photographs. So did the beautiful eyes and expressive brows that had caught my attention, and the braces that were part of her radiant smile.

Joanna and I wanted to celebrate all of it.

After the session, Ireland would take those photographs to Atlanta, receive two immediate agency callbacks, and be offered a contract with Forward Agency. But at the beginning, our work was much more personal: getting to know a girl with an ambition, and deciding how to photograph her honestly and beautifully.

A Portfolio With Room for Her Personality

When a parent asks me whether professional photography is worth it for modeling, I think about the decisions that happen long before the shutter clicks. For Ireland, we needed enough variety to show how she could move between looks, while keeping a sense of who she was throughout the collection.

The wardrobe gave me the beginnings of that story. Once I knew what she would wear, I could choose the backdrops to carry it forward. I knew I wanted bubblegum pink with the lavender sweater. There was something wonderfully youthful about that combination, especially with the easy shape of her baggy jeans.

A youthful wardrobe choice became the starting point for a bright, playful color story.

With the denim jacket, I chose aquamarine blue. It complemented the clothing and brought attention to her eyes, giving us a different feeling within the same session. The white T-shirt kept the styling simple enough for her expression to have a place in the photograph.

Aquamarine blue connected the denim styling with the color of Ireland’s eyes.

Her soft dress offered another mood, while athletic wear gave us an additional style to work with. The black outfit lent itself to the black-and-white editorial portraits I wanted to create. We had backup clothing ready, although Ireland never needed it. The pieces we had chosen already gave us a beautiful range.

A change in wardrobe introduced a softer mood while keeping the session appropriate for Ireland’s age.

For me, this is where the value of a planned modeling portfolio session becomes tangible. Each change of clothing has a reason. The colors, the light, and the expression work together, and the finished photographs give someone a fuller sense of the person in front of the camera.

“Lead with their child’s interests.”

The Ease You Can See in a Photograph

Lisa Perez created Ireland’s hair and makeup for the session. She is one of the extraordinary artists I work with, alongside Melissa Bogardus, known as Makeup Mel. All of my model headshot sessions include a makeup artist and an assistant, because the people surrounding a client help shape the experience as much as the photographs themselves.

With Ireland, that experience needed to give her room to feel comfortable and be herself. I asked her questions, guided her expression, and let the conversation become part of the direction. She responded beautifully. Every time I gave her something to work with, she found her way into it. She was a natural.

Those small exchanges are a part of photography I love. I can see expression changing as we work, and I can guide it while it is happening. That is why my portrait experience begins with planning and continues with direction throughout the session. A client can arrive with an interest and a little uncertainty, and we have somewhere to begin together.

Simple black clothing let expression, pose, and light shape this editorial look. One of my favorite images I’ve ever created.

“It was more than a photo shoot. It was a total experience.”

Joanna Edge, Ireland’s mother

Joanna later described what that felt like from a mother’s perspective. In her Google review, she called it “more than a photo shoot” and wrote about the hair and makeup artist, the personalized welcome memorabilia, and the comfortable environment. The line I keep coming back to is this one:

“My daughter felt her most confident and the results showed.”

Joanna Edge, Ireland’s mother, in her Google review shared for this story.

There is so much a parent hopes for when supporting a child’s ambition. Knowing that Ireland felt confident during the experience mattered to me, and Joanna would tell me later that the photographs helped them carry that confidence into their agency meetings.

From Trussville to Atlanta

Immediately following our photo session, Ireland began using her images to show several agencies in Atlanta. On my advice, she worked with Model Makers Group for a scouting event where she could meet with agencies and present her collection.

She received two immediate callbacks: one from Forward Agency and another from Helen Wells Agency. Then came an offer of a contract from Forward Agency. I am happy to report they accepted an amazing offer.

I am proud of what Ireland accomplished. She brought her own expression and presence to those meetings, with photographs that showed the variety we had worked together to create. Joanna told me that having the portraits helped them feel much more confident presenting her to the agencies.

For a family at the beginning of this journey, those are meaningful developments. A contract offer opens a possibility; paid assignments and earnings are later outcomes. Ireland’s story gives us a specific account of how she used her portfolio and what followed, rather than a promise of what every session will produce.

What Makes the Investment Worthwhile?

The answer begins with what you want the photographs to help you do.

Some families need simple images for an initial submission. Others are ready to build a collection with different looks and expressions, or to prepare for an opportunity they have already identified. Understanding that purpose helps us decide whether a professional session is the right next step.

Agency instructions are a useful place to start. Forward The Agency’s submission form, for example, requests a close-up, a full-body photograph, and a personality video, with optional fields for professional photographs. The Federal Trade Commission’s guidance for families exploring modeling also explains that simple snapshots are commonly used for children and cautions against promises of guaranteed work. Professional photography can have real value without being a universal requirement for a first introduction.

In Ireland’s case, we had a clear reason to create a broader portfolio. She needed photographs that showed different sides of her, and she used them when meeting with agencies. The callbacks and contract offer were concrete developments, while Joanna’s account tells us about the confidence the experience gave them.

Financial return takes longer to assess. A session’s cost, travel, event expenses, and any optional artwork would need to be considered alongside actual modeling income. For now, Ireland’s story is about a beginning: a useful collection, a family ready to present it, and an opportunity to move forward.

That is the conversation I want to have with a parent before we plan a session. Tell me what your child loves, where their interests are taking them, and what they hope to explore. I can guide the photographs and draw on my network of modeling colleagues across the South to help you consider appropriate next steps.

The Beginning, Bound Into a Book

Ireland’s photographs also became my signature Atelier Album, a part of the story that is especially close to my heart.

The albums are handmade in Greece by artisans who take their archival craft seriously. Their museum-grade materials give me a beautiful foundation for the work I do with the design. I direct the finished collection and create the layout and typography myself, carrying the decisions from the portrait session onto the pages.

When I design an album, I am thinking about how the photographs belong together. The lavender sweater and bright pink backdrop have their place; the denim portraits have theirs. The softer dress and black-and-white editorial images change the mood as the pages turn. I want the book to hold that variety with the same care that went into making it.

Working with these artisans allows me to create the kind of editorial product I envision as a portrait artist. The Atelier Album feels like an extension of my work, from the cover to the magazine style typography to the relationship between one portrait and the next.

“It is truly an extension of me as a portrait artist to craft these atelier albums.”

An album is an optional artwork choice, separate from an agency’s submission requirements. For Ireland’s family, it also holds a chapter they will be able to revisit: who she was at twelve, what she dreamed of doing, and the photographs that accompanied her first steps.

Where Your Child’s Story Could Begin

Ireland’s began at home in Trussville, Alabama. Yours may begin with a conversation about something your child has mentioned once, or an interest they have been talking about for years. Maybe its for acting headshots, or they are wanting to get into modeling. I welcome those conversations with families from Birmingham, Mountain Brook, Homewood, Vestavia Hills, and Hoover, as well as those making plans to visit from farther away.

For families in Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, and Dothan, or along the coast in Mobile, Fairhope, and Daphne, we can discuss the goals of the session as you plan your visit. I also welcome inquiries from Mississippi, Georgia, and Tennessee, where a trip to the studio can be planned around the collection you want to create.

You can learn more about my work as a portrait artist, but the most helpful place to begin is with your child. What interests them? What do they enjoy? What would they love to try?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is professional photography necessary to start modeling?

No. Initial requirements vary by agency, and some accept simple, current snapshots or digitals. Read the agency’s instructions first. Professional photography can be useful when you need a planned portfolio with varied looks and guided expression.

Can professional modeling photographs guarantee an agency contract?

No. Photographs cannot guarantee callbacks, representation, bookings, or earnings. Ireland received two callbacks and a contract offer after using her images at an Atlanta scouting event, but that was her individual outcome.

How do you keep a child’s modeling portfolio appropriate for their age?

I plan with the child and parent, select clothing that reflects the child’s interests and age, and guide expression throughout the session. For Ireland, we celebrated her braces, youthful wardrobe, and personality rather than trying to make her look older.

What is included in Breanne’s model headshot sessions?

My model headshot sessions include a makeup artist and an assistant. I guide wardrobe planning, backdrop choices, and expression. Lisa Perez created Ireland’s hair and makeup. Ask about the specific image collection and optional artwork when planning your session.

Do I need an Atelier Album to submit to a modeling agency?

No. An Atelier Album is an optional custom artwork and keepsake, not a universal agency requirement. My signature albums are handmade in Greece with museum-grade materials, and I design their layouts and typography. Follow each agency’s instructions for submitting images.
